People spend a lot of money on electronics. It’s a shame that all that money can be lost as the result of just one power surge or spike. For that reason, many homeowners have installed surge protection in their homes. There are a few options for whole-home surge protection, but they typically require a licensed electrician to install. Even then, it’s still possible for a power surge to damage individual electronics.

As an added layer of protection, it may be good to have a surge protector connected directly to the more important electronics in your home. These work by detecting nanoseconds of increased voltage flowing through the circuit, and redirects excess voltage into the ground. A few words of caution, though. Many people use power strips and expect that these are providing surge protection. However, not all power strips include surge protector functionality. Additionally, each time a surge protector is hit by a power surge or spike, its’ effectiveness is reduced; that means you’ll need to replace it from time to time.
